Shiatsu appointments are for an hour including consultation. The initial consultation may take a little longer
At the beginning of your first session there will be a confidential consultation you will be asked some questions around your working life, your home life and any activities that you tend to do in your spare time. You will also be asked about your medical history and any current illnesses that you may be suffering from. This information should help the practitioner decide how to approach treatment.Relaxation is a learned art for this reason most people find they get more from the second treatment. The immediate effect of treatments differs with each individual.
After a treatment a sense of well-being and relaxation is common. The treatment varies depending on the needs of the client, but each will involve similar elements.
Though the word Shiatsu literally translated means finger pressure, in fact a combination of thumbs, palms, elbows and knees may be used to apply varying amounts of pressure to different parts of the body (including your head, face and feet). Points (the same as the ones used in acupuncture) are stimulated. Stretches and rotations are also used.
Please wear loose comfortable clothing such as jogging bottoms and t-shirt, trousers are more appropriate than skirts (you will remain fully clothed throughout the treatment).
Do not eat a big meal for at least 90 minutes before your treatment.
Avoid artificial stimulants such as alcohol before your treatment.
For your treatment you will usually lie on a futon on the floor, though treatments can be adapted to suit the needs of the client. That may mean working on a massage couch, in a massage chair or making other adaptations. Please let us know if you have specific needs.
It is possible that as part of the healing process you may have slight symptoms such as fatigue and slight headaches, occaisionally feelings of nausea. If affected drink plenty of water. In the unlikely event that you do experience such side affects after the first treatment you will experience them less as your body gets used to treatments.
