Shiatsu is a form of hands on body work that has its roots in Japanese and Chinese medicine. It is based on the principle that we experience health and wellbeing when we are in a state of balance or relaxed awareness.
Shiatsu is a holistic therapy and can include work on the whole body,
Shiatsu is non-invasive and safe. The principal aim of Shiatsu is to work on the overall energy system of the client to promote a sense of well being.
Shiatsu is a complementary therapy, it is not an alternative to your usual doctor's care but has been shown to be significantly effective in helping reduce and manage certain symptoms. Shiatsu is not a replacement for Western Medicine.
The aim of Shiatsu is to assist the body's natural healing process by encouraging the client's energy to move into a more balanced state. Shiatsu helps the body to heal itself. In certain situations it can help the client to cope and feel more comfortable when healing is unlikely.
The Shiatsu Society states that "you don't have to be ill to benefit from Shiatsu". This is very true as many clients will attest to how relaxing it is in itself. However, the European Shiatsu Federations large cross-European studies found that between 39% and 59% of people who had shiatsu did so to maintain their health.
A significant conclusion from the cross European study is that Shiatsu is likely to leave you feeling calmer and more realxed, and can improve a variety of symptoms. Both new and regular users of shiatsu felt "physically more mobile", "more energised", "more balanced" or "more able to cope with things". About 54% of regular shiatsu receivers sleep better followiing shiatsu.
